OK, it is official, even though Utah is supposedly one of the best run state governments, our politicians are really stupid.
The latest is the liquor laws. According to various sources, including a friend who works at the capital and the Standard Examiner, wine coolers and anything like it will not be sold in stores anymore, only in liquor stores. Which means the alcohol content goes up, but access to them is more difficult. Supposedly this was done to prevent "young girls" from drinking as they are the only ones attracted to these drinks. (No concern for "young boys" you notice). So that is dumb, really dumb. No mention of the fact that people can get access to Meth easier than alcohol now a days, but hey what the fuck..why do they care?
Second thing they are doing is increasing the size of the shot in a mixed drink, to 1.5 ounce. This is great as it gets us more in line with other states, however, these bozos just now realized that people could order a side car and actually make their drink 2 ounces of liquor, so we are actually get less! Along with that, you can still order side cars, just has to be a different alcohol than what is in your drink. Uh, ok. So if I am at table with someone who is drinking a vodka martini and I have a Tom Collins, they can order a side car of gin, I order a side car of vodka and Voila we trade!! Idiots!
They of course passed these laws so that we can increase our tourism. Really? That is what we are doing? Then why not get rid of the dumb ass private club rules? Honestly, the last thing that the state of Utah needs is a 85% LDS legislature dictating to a 60% LDS state what our liquor laws should be. Particularly when the tourists are probably about 15 - 25% LDS. Not that all LDS people don't drink or that non-LDS do, but you get my point. They have no clue.
