Fire!!!

This weeks Project Say Something is from Monika. "Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire; after saving your loved ones, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any ONE item. What would it be?"

This is such an interesting question and really makes me think about what I value. Anything that I would want to save is probably going to be hard to get to or I want more than one thing. After all I have been through in the last few years has taught me that people are more important than things, so despite my family and pets, there is nothing I would HAVE to save. I am not saying that it wouldn't be heartbreaking to lose things as a lot of them are not replaceable, but then again, neither is my family.

However, to play along with the question I have come up with one thing. I would want to keep my bible. It is not really mine, it was my brothers. Complete with notes and things that he put in there. Since it came to me after his death and I use it all the time, I would not want to lose it as it is really the one connection that I have. Besides, I have a feeling after losing all of our possesions and house in a fire we would need that for comfort.

Book Review 2

Well I finished Duma Key by Stephen King. In typical King fashion it was intresting at the beginning, with the usual catch of getting me involved and interested in the characters and story...then Wham!! Next thing I knew I was reading in my daughters bedroom while she slept with all the lights on and the cat on my lap! It was so freaky stuff towards the end. Very well done, as always, but it is interesting to me to see how portions of his accident and how it affected him manifest themselves in his writing.

Next I moved on to "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini (He also wrote "The Kite Runner"). I enjoyed this book very much, more so than the first one. It was just as disturbing, but in a different and less confrontational way. What I really liked is how it focuses on the lives of women in Afghanistan and all that the country went through in the last 40 years. I highly recommend this book.

The next book I started on was "The Audacity of Hope" by Barack Obama. This book was an interesting insight into his philosophies, more of his history, and just the man himself. I enjoyed it, but then I like him...so there you go.

What sound or noise do you hate? Any living thing crying in pain.
What is your favorite curse word? Damn or Damnit
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Museum curator at the Louvre
What profession would you not like to do? Mortician
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? "Welcome my free spirit. I never told you it would be easy, but I told you it would be worth it".

Watching Paint Dry

So we are getting ready to have new carpet for our girls rooms (WooHoo!!) which means that it is necessary to paint furniture and baseboards before it gets put in. I thought I would share this picture of missy and her daddy painting the bookshelf. I love moments like this, they make the hard parenting moments totally worth it.

Paper Plate Mommy

Apparently, to the beautiful and creative 6 year old mind, this is what a pregnant mommy looks like...paper plate style!

I never know what will happen when Missy gets a hankering to "do a craft." We have a blast doing whatever she comes up with but...(ack! the whole idea makes me want to run screaming from the room! I am so not THAT mom. Craft? You are kidding right? Unless it says "Macaroni and Cheese" after it than I am lost!) Sometimes we end up with incredible painted pictures or these weird little felt keychains. Other times it is a foamie hodge podge. But I have to say, that out of everything we have done together this is my favorite. And yes, that is a pipe cleaner baby in the belly.

Saying Something Stupid....Doh!

This week Kim asked "What is the stupidest thing that you have ever done?" I don't have one major stupid thing....I have a list.

~ Stayed with Ryan waaayyy to long. You know how you are a stupid teenager and you get caught up in a manipulative relationship and you keep breaking up/getting back together/breaking up...before you finally hit your head against a brick wall and say "I have wasted 3 years on this?"
~ Didn't sell some stock when it was high because I was a greedy little
thing and then lost way more money than I had a right to have in the first place. Yeah, that was dumb.
~ Didn't take the opportunity to travel more or move overseas when I had the chance.
~ Dropped out of college and gave up on being an Art Historian.
~ Compromised on my position to make someone else happy, even though it made me miserable and ruined our relationship.
~ Lashed out at my friends and took too long to apologize for it.

~ Move back home. (Now, mom and dad, don't get me wrong, I love you guys and am very grateful for your generosity and help. I just wish I had experienced that for a longer period of time. I would have starved, but I would have done it on my own damnit!)
~ Not spend more time with my grandparents/aunts and uncles/cousins as an adult.
~ Go into debt all for the love of Nordstroms.
~ Let friends slip out of my life and not make an attempt to hang on to some amazing relationships.
~ Not call someone back after a blind date. (Smartest thing I ever did was call him 4 months later!)
~ I am sure that some people think I should say things like smoke, drink, premartial sex, drugs, etc. But screw that! I am glad for those experiences, and in fact I don't regret any of the above because they made me who I am (enigmaburrito). And I believe in my own humble opinion, that I am a very cool chick.

Things that annoyed me this past week/weekend

The older lady in Hell-Mart who thinks that it is acceptable to break the seal on eye shadow/lipstick/blush and proceed to test them on her skin. Ok, that is just rude and unsanitary. Can't she go to Dillards or Sears and have them try make-up on her at the counters there? Gross!

The stupid girls (like the Pink song) that think there teeny weenie doggies are just so cutesy wutesy and everyone must want to see them so I will bring them with me everywhere! Including Target, Costco, Harmons, etc. Now, I KNOW these dogs are not service dogs...unless it is the "peanut butter of urban legend" type service. So please, for the love of God, leave the damn dog at home. It will be ok and so will you.

Guys on motorcycles who think it is ok to speed up to merge in front of me and then slow down once they have done so. They then wonder why I am riding close to them. Hmmm, maybe if you fixed your cranial - rectal inversion problem, you could figure out that I was going the speed limit, you now are not and I don't appreciate you doing that to me. Rule of the road "if you are going to merge or change lanes in front of someone, go faster than they were".

LDS Missionaries who desecrate Catholic churches. Apparently, they think that it is funny and "Christ-like" to go into another church and mock it. Really? Is that what is taught on missions? I know it is not and these guys are obvious exceptions to the rule, but come on! I am so not impressed by their level of maturity and respect for other religions. I am not surprised however that all the LDS spokesmen could muster is "disappointment" that this was done. I hope that the parish wins their lawsuit.

Small talk. This is a consistent irritation that rears its ugly head from time to time. What do people think that they need to make small talk? What is that all about? I would rather not talk and just call it good really. Particularly when the small talk has to revolve around my current prego condition. Typically, this is what happens. They ask me about it, is this your first or whatever. I then either answer honestly, which leads me to explaining about my son and makes them all apologetic or I omit Dylan, which makes me feel like shit. So, let's just agree to not have small talk OK? It is a waste of our time and serves no purpose.

OK, so this may or may not be driven by raging hormones. It is hard for me to tell.

Project Say Something

This weeks question comes from the "other" Kim. "How (*insert band name/artist here*) Changed My Life."

I had to think about this question for a while as for me there did not really seem to be any music that "changed my life". I mean, I have bands that I really like (Beatles, Erasure) and can listen to most of the time, or music that I grew up with that holds a special place in my heart (Neil Diamond, yes that Neil Diamond...I love him ok?!), but nothing really seemed to stand out.

Then it hit me...as the song came on my iPod I was reminded that at a very low point in my life this past year a song changed my life.

The song is "Come Rain or Come Shine" by David Francey. This last year was the roughest that my marriage, and in fact entire 14 year relationship with D, has gone through. I guess losing loved ones and a job, plus the normal BS does that to you. Needless to say, we were the closest that we have ever been (and I hope to be) to ending our relationship. And then, I go to an outdoor concert at the Nature Center featuring David Francey. I had never heard of this man, but he is a Scottish/Canadian folk singer so I though it would be fun. Right before the concert I had a big fight with D. So here I am, annoyed, irritated, frustrated, and depressed listening to this great music and stories, thinking "well this is better than being at home". Then he introduces the song "Come Rain or Come Shine" saying that he wrote it for his wife and that he is proud a lot of people play it at their weddings. The music starts, I am laying on a blanket looking at the sky through a tree and he sings the words...those beautiful words about loving someone through good and bad. The words that remind me of what I entered into and why. That this is a commitment, not just some situation I can walk away from when it is tough. I promised, before God and everyone to love this man till death do us part, in sickeness and in health, for richer or poor, in good times and bad...period.

Now aside from D becoming some raging lunatic wife beating adulterer, that is what I intend to do as long as he will have me. That song, that night, changed my life for the better in so many ways. Just a few weeks later I discovered I was pregnant and honestly we have had one argument (not that we argued that much before our year from hell) since that day.

Music can change your life, if you are open to what it has to say.

Eat, Drink, and be Merry for tomorrow.....

OK, it is official, even though Utah is supposedly one of the best run state governments, our politicians are really stupid.

The latest is the liquor laws. According to various sources, including a friend who works at the capital and the Standard Examiner, wine coolers and anything like it will not be sold in stores anymore, only in liquor stores. Which means the alcohol content goes up, but access to them is more difficult. Supposedly this was done to prevent "young girls" from drinking as they are the only ones attracted to these drinks. (No concern for "young boys" you notice). So that is dumb, really dumb. No mention of the fact that people can get access to Meth easier than alcohol now a days, but hey what the fuck..why do they care?

Second thing they are doing is increasing the size of the shot in a mixed drink, to 1.5 ounce. This is great as it gets us more in line with other states, however, these bozos just now realized that people could order a side car and actually make their drink 2 ounces of liquor, so we are actually get less! Along with that, you can still order side cars, just has to be a different alcohol than what is in your drink. Uh, ok. So if I am at table with someone who is drinking a vodka martini and I have a Tom Collins, they can order a side car of gin, I order a side car of vodka and Voila we trade!! Idiots!

They of course passed these laws so that we can increase our tourism. Really? That is what we are doing? Then why not get rid of the dumb ass private club rules? Honestly, the last thing that the state of Utah needs is a 85% LDS legislature dictating to a 60% LDS state what our liquor laws should be. Particularly when the tourists are probably about 15 - 25% LDS. Not that all LDS people don't drink or that non-LDS do, but you get my point. They have no clue.

OK - end of rant.
